Personnel Decisions Research Institutes, Inc. (PDRI, www.pdri.com) invited Solid to participate in a project for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans Employment and Training Service (VETS, www.dol.gov/vets/). PDRI tasked Solid to develop a prototype of an interactive, web-based career guidance tool for military service members who are leaving the service and veterans that can be used to facilitate their transition from military occupations to civilian occupations.
The purpose of the prototype was to explore the feasibility of such a tool and illustrate a possible implementation, including how distinct user types would navigate through it.
One of the strengths of the CGT design is that the tool would access a variety of disparate Internet-based databases and present the resulting information to the user in a single, easy to understand screen. Implementing such access was outside the scope of the feasiblility study, so Solid "mocked up" a fully-functioning online tool using a combination of JavaScript and PHP.
To do this, Solid developed descriptions of three fictitious people, each representing one of the user types identified as targets by the client. The user descriptions included a short biography and what the user hoped to gain from using the CGT. A script was provided for each user, containing instructions describing the path the user took through the tool. By following the script while using the mockup, the client was able to experience tool as if it were fully implemented, from the perspective of each of the three user types. Further, the demonstration scripts could be emailed, along with the demo URI and access instructions, to whomever the client wished. In that way, key people could experience the prototype without needing to attend a demonstration.
