Following successful collaboration with Personnel Decisions Research Institutes, Inc. (PDRI) on a Career Guidance Tool web site prototype, PDRI and Aguirre International asked Solid to assist them with the development of a prototype job search tool that could be used to identify potential labor markets in high-growth/high-demand industries. One of the key objectives of this prototype was to demonstrate the use of a database generated by a sophisticated algorithm developed by PDRI. The algorithm itself was also being tested.
Often in prototypes, features such as database-driven functionality are "mocked up" to save implementing a server-side database and the related client side connections and queries. However, in this case Solid decided to create a 'real' database application as it was likely the client would want to change, update, and add to the test data based on algorithm testing. Since the prototype Solid delivered actually queries the test database, new data can be added or changed without requiring changes to the prototype, and the number of records in the database does not matter. This provides the client with an important flexibility that a traditional mockup could not support.
In addition to delivering a 'real' database application, Solid's design clearly highlighted how employers and employees could easily use the tool to gain valuable information not currently available on the Internet. Seeing how a simple, three-step process could deliver a rich information set to users without requiring specialized knowledge or a complex process clearly demonstrated the merits of the project and of the tool. Solid incorporated into the prototype key functionalities, such as search capabilities, the ability to sort search results, and potential advanced search options. This allowed decisionmakers to get a complete sense of the value of the tool.
