CPT Virtual Training
MSSC has partnered with Amatrol to develop online interactive learning units for the MSSC Certified Production Technician (CPT) training program. Currently there are 42 online units, each requiring about 2 hours to complete. See the CTP e-Learning Overview for an introduction to the online learning program.
These online units coupled with the McGraw Hill text will prepare students to take the four MSSC assessments: Safety, Quality, Production Processes and Maintenance Awareness. The specific features and benefits of these online units include:
- Increases pass-rate of test takers– The online units include simulations and relevant learning content, which prepare students better than other resources for these assessments. In our pilot tests, 91% of the assessments were passed, with 73% of the students passing all four assessments to become certified MSSC technicians.
- Increases computer skills– Students increase their computer skills through use of the online units. The simulations give students the opportunity to use the computer in a manner that is comparable to the way in which they might interface to an operator terminal to monitor machine operation or production data. Many students have reported a dramatic increase in their ability and comfort level with computers after completing the course using online units.
- Develops machine operation skills– Students learn basic technical skills necessary to be successful in operating and performing predictive/ preventive maintenance on machines. The online units teach basic skills in lubrication, electrical, control, fluid power, and mechanical systems. The online units include virtual trainers, which allow the students to set up and operate these systems in software just as they would in a lab environment.
- Increases access– The online units can be used at any location that can access a DSL or faster broadband connection. This means students can learn from home or work as well as in school. This could enable more students to be reached with the training and allow them to practice their skills as much as needed to master the knowledge and skills.
- Provides individualized instruction capability– The online units are designed for individualized learning, so students can leverage their individual skills and knowledge to proceed through the course much faster. This also allows out-of-class learning, which could reduce the amount of teacher time spent to conduct a class. Our second pilot class significantly reduced the cost of training for the provider by having the students do their online learning on their own time.
- Enables greater training capacity– The virtual trainers enable students to perform lab exercises online without need of expensive labs. This allows training to be conducted at schools and other locations that do not have lab facilities.
